The inn was in need of modernization with its booking, marketing, and management systems. Amazingly enough, just days after signing the contracts on the Bross, Kevin and Karen's house burned to the ground, with their daughter barely escaping the flames. Now they were committed! While Kevin is a full-time orchardist, growing apples, cherries, peaches, plums, and apricots on several different orchards in the North Fork Valley, he and Karen put their full efforts into improving the Bross's bookings, systems, facilities, and reputation. Their efforts have been very successful, as they built new manager's quarters, installed a new modern booking system, marketed the property on a national basis, and doubled the occupancy rate. Despite closing the inn for December, January, and February, the Bross is showing good returns. Karen and Kevin think it's time to enjoy the rewards of their hard work and start traveling. Paonia, Colorado-organic farms, orchards, vineyards, hemp farms, mountain views, festivals Paonia is a happening little town of about 1,000 people located about an hour and 45 minutes southwest of Aspen, an hour from Glenwood Springs, and an hour from Crested Butte in southwest Colorado. The town is known for its excellent climate, beautiful environment, with prominent peaks overlooking the town, lively small-town atmosphere, and productive growing environment. There are many orchards, vineyards, organic farms, ranches, and even hemp farms in the surrounding area. Paonia is famous for its produce, much of which is grown Kevin and his brother, Kris, at their First Fruits Organic Farms. The local "Pickin' in the Park" music series attracts hundreds of fans every week during the summer. Cherry Days, which takes place on the Fourth of July, is a favorite draw. Car clubs, motorcyclists, hikers, hunters, adventurers, bicycle riders, travelers, wanderers-the Bross Hotel Clientele Paonia is uniquely situated at the convergence of several of the most popular driving routes in one of America's most beautiful states. Highway 133 over McClure Pass is known as the West Elk Scenic Byway, and car clubs and motorcycle enthusiasts come from all over the world to drive that route. To the south, Highway 92 over the Black Mesa hugs the rim of the world-famous Black Canyon, and it is a "must ride" for Moto Guzzi, Harley-Davidson, Ducati, and BMW riders, as well as drivers in Porches, BMW's, Corvettes, and other sports cars. The Bross Hotel is a natural place for them to stay. In fact, the BMW Club of America stays in Paonia every June and the Bross is completely booked during that time frame. Colorado's famous "Ride the Rockies" bicycle tour has routed through Paonia on several occasions, with the Bross as a favorite lodging. In the fall, the hotel is at the heart of "color season" as the aspens and Gambel oak turn yellow, orange, and russet colors, and hunting season always brings some travelers, as local elk and mule deer hunting is excellent.
